"Machine Learning Applications in Scientific Programming"

Wendy Carande
University of Colorado Boulder

As scientific datasets expand in size and scope, machine learning tools can enhance our understanding of data and our ability to analyze data effectively. However, determining whether machine learning is the right fit for a scientific problem and which algorithm to use can be daunting. This talk will focus on what types of scientific problems and data are well-suited to machine learning solutions, from molecular to astronomical scales, as well as what algorithms are employed in these solutions. The latter part of the talk will address current techniques for space weather forecasting and the advantages and challenges of introducing machine learning into the field.

Biography
Wendy Carande is a Scientific Software Engineer at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics in Boulder, CO. She is passionate about projects that use cutting-edge data science techniques on challenging scientific questions. In 2012, she earned her PhD in astrophysics from Arizona State University, followed by a three year postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute for Standards and Technology developing machine learning methods to predict critical properties of pure compounds. She completed an Insight Data Science Fellowship in 2017 before joining the Data Systems group at LASP.
