CISL Seminar Series: "NCAR/CISL Plan for Science at Scale"

NCAR/CISL PLAN FOR SCIENCE AT SCALE

Jeff de La Beaujardière, PhD

Director, NCAR/CISL Information Systems Division

CISL, NCAR, and the geosciences more generally, are facing a "Big Data" problem. Huge data volumes, and myriad datasets with differing formats and organization, make it difficult to perform scientific research given the scale and scope of available model outputs and observations. CISL is therefore considering enhancements and evolution in its information systems and services in order to enable "Science at Scale " by NCAR, the NSF research community, and potential new user communities. We anticipate making popular or high-impact datasets readily usable by community-developed analysis tools deployed both at NWSC and in the public cloud. This seminar will summarize the goals and key objectives of the current draft of the plan, invite feedback, and seek interested participants or stakeholders.

Biography

Jeff de La Beaujardière has been Director of the NCAR/CISL Information Systems Division since August 2018. His focus is on the entire spectrum of geospatial data usability, and in leveraging HPC and public Cloud to bring analysis and visualization capabilities to the data. Prior to arriving at NCAR he spent 25 years working at NASA and NOAA near Washington DC on web services development, data visualization, interoperability architecture, open data policies, and service on inter-agency and international committees. Jeff received his BA Physics from UC Berkeley and PhD Astrophysics from CU Boulder.
