Come Celebrate Lawrence Buja's Career at NCAR

Lawrence's career comprises more than 25 years with expertise in high-performance computing for atmospheric modeling, management of large environmental data sets, and most recently, applied research on the human dimensions of environmental extremes and climate change.

He joined NCAR in 1990 with the Community Climate Model Core Group getting his first taste of CRAY computing power. In 2003, he became Scientific Project Manager of Warren Washington's Climate Change Prediction group. During his tenure at NCAR, Lawrence was instrumental in growing and sustaining the Center’s climate research programs and securing funding to advance technology transfer and develop significant partnerships – such as co-leading the launch phase of the $70M NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center.

Early in his career, Lawrence helped develop the climate models and carry out the future-climate simulations that contributed to the Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He also contributed to the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Then from 2008 to 2017, he led the Climate Science and Applications Program (CSAP) as Program Director at the Research Applications Laboratory (RAL). During this time, his USDA project won USDA's highest award: The Abraham Lincoln Honor Award.

Lawrence will be leaving in February to undertake a new opportunity, so please come celebrate his contribution and wish him well.
