CGD Oceanography Seminar - Shao

Title: An early look at CanESM5 Presenter: Andrew Shao - University of Victoria

Abstract:

CanESM5 is the contribution from the Canadian Centre for Climate Modeling and Analysis (CCCma) for the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). This presentation will detail the technical evolution from CanESM2 (its CMIP5 predecessor) and will present preliminary results from the DECK, historical, and ScenarioMIP experiments. Notably, CanESM5 exhibits a significantly higher climate sensitivity which we speculate may be due to a sea-ice bias in the pre-industrial control and/or the new treatment of aerosols. Lastly an overview of other planned experiments (including one with a more complex ocean biogeochemistry model) will be discussed as well as an outline of the framework we have implemented to ensure experiment reproducibility.

Date: Wednesday, 13 February 2019 Time: 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm Location: Mesa Lab – Chapman Room (ML-245) Seminar will not be webcast

Announcement Timing:
Tuesday, February 12, 2019 to Wednesday, February 13, 2019
