Intranet Naming Contest: Vote by September 21

Thank you to everyone who submitted fun and thoughtful name ideas for our new intranet! After careful consideration, it was clear that four of the ideas stood out for their creativity and potential to:

  • Represent our scientific mission by leveraging Earth system science terminology and concepts
  • Represent the vision for our new intranet (more info below)
  • Visually influence the site’s design

The top four top contenders are:

  • Coriolis
  • Dynamo
  • Jetstream
  • Sundog

Vote for your favorite name by Monday, September 21, 5 p.m. (and be sure to check out the Honorable Mention category below).

As a reminder, our new intranet tool is designed to give us a single, central, collaborative, easy-to-use source of key information for staff. The overarching vision is a “virtual town square,” a jumping-off point from which staff can easily find out what’s going on across the organization, complete business tasks, and engage with one another.

Phase I of this multi-phase project (to be launched October/November) will include a central intranet home page, which will make it easier to access existing information that is currently spread across multiple internal websites. As the project progresses, the home page will evolve to meet changing needs and help staff find information as it is added to the new platform. The long-term vision is a single internal website that encompasses:

  • Employee news
  • Virtual engagement with colleagues
  • Organization-wide, task-based portals, content, and guidance
  • Sub-sites that can be used for collaboration within individual labs, departments, and programs.

Please keep an eye out for ongoing updates about the intranet project as it progresses, including ways the new intranet can help you and what to expect during each phase of the transition.

We would be remiss if we did not mention a few clever pop-culture name ideas, which gave us a good laugh but ultimately could not be included in the final list for voting. Thank you to these creative employees!

  • Intra McNetface (submitted by Jeff Hancock)
  • Skynet (submitted by Britt Stephens)
