Research Abstract: Machine learning algorithms are part of our everyday digital lives, but did you know that they can also be used in atmospheric research? These algorithms can improve weather predictions, assist forecasters in identifying hazards, and aid in increasing our understanding of atmospheric phenomena. Join NCAR scientist David John Gagne as he provides an overview of machine learning algorithms commonly used in atmospheric science research, such as in producing more accurate predictions of hailstorms and hurricanes. Peer inside the black box of machine learning as it discovers the patterns that lead to severe weather, and learn about the challenges, blind spots, and potential hazards of machine learning.

Watch archived lectures and learn more on our NCAR Explorer Series webpage.

You are invited to participate in a short course on Citizen Science that will be facilitated by NCAR Early Career Faculty Innovator, Monica Barra, and her graduate student, Teresa Norman. Citizen Science is a concept and research methodology that seeks to question and expand the purview of scientific authority beyond the realm of scientific laboratories and experts. This short course will introduce the history, theoretical concepts, and different applications of Citizen Science, as well as the possibilities and limitations of Citizen Science research. The short course will be held on Wednesdays from 12-2pm MDT, beginning July 15th for four sessions:

  • July 15
  • July 22
  • July 29
  • Aug 5

Each week, invited scholars and practitioners will discuss these concepts and each session will be supported by short readings.

Sessions are free and open to the public. Please share with your colleagues as well as faculty, students, practitioners, etc. Please RSVP for the Zoom link to the sessions and access to shared readings. For more information, visit the course website.

Dutch Apple Pie

Dutch Apple Pie is my father’s favorite. He asks for it for his birthday every year and while I’m happy to make it for him, his birthday doesn’t exactly fall inside of apple season. So over the years I’ve compromised in some areas and allowed myself to “cheat” with the filling a little bit. Adjusting the flavorings and spices of the filling makes for a different pie every time you make this. If you aren’t confident in your ability to make a pie crust, buying frozen pie pastry or even a pre-baked crust is fine. What’s important is that you enjoy the end result.

Cheesecake

I had asked my husband what recipe I should share this week, and he said, “The New York Style Cheesecake, because everyone deserves a treat.” The recipe I like to use is from George Geary’s cookbook: “125 Best Cheesecake Recipes”. Have a Happy July 4th weekend!

Guacamole

We have had so many positive compliments about the Guacamole from our fellow co-workers at Foothills and this recipe was requested to be shared with our UCAR family. It is a great recipe to make during the summertime or any time you can find ripe avocados, from tacos and tortilla chips to salads and sides. Enjoy!

Southwest Shredded Beef Sandwich

Chef Nancy had a great recipe with step-by-step pics of Chicago Beefs back on April 30th but here's a slighlty different take on a Southwest version of a tasty beef sandwich.

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

Nutmeg is one of my favorite spices because it can be made sweet or savory. I love a little hint of nutmeg in my Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie.

Curried Shrimp with Almonds

Many of you have been asking for more curry dishes. This dish I've had in N.Y.C. at the “21” club, a former speakeasy right in Times square. The building has been there for more than 8 decades, serving food and spirits. This dish has  been a mainstay on their menu for years. This dish would pair well with a nice Gewurztraminer wine, a very crisp, light, German wine. Enjoy!
