HAO Colloquium - Katrina Bossert, GATS Inc

Orographic Gravity Wave Variability and Influences on the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere During the DEEPWAVE CampaignOrographic gravity waves play an important role in the overall momentum transport throughout the atmosphere. The Deep Propagating Gravity Wave Experiment (DEEPWAVE), which took place out of Christchurch, NZ in June and July 2014 provided the opportunity to study orographic gravity wave generation and propagation to higher regions in the atmosphere. Orographic gravity waves have the potential to influence the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region of the atmosphere both through propagation up to these altitudes in the wintertime hemisphere as well as through breaking at lower altitudes and generating secondary gravity waves which propagate to higher altitudes. This talk will give an overview of some of the findings during the DEEPWAVE campaign regarding spectral influences of orographic gravity waves that propagate to the MLT, and secondary gravity wave generation associated with breaking orographic gravity waves.
