What I do
I work with a talented team of writers, editors, illustrators, Web developers, and others to handle media relations for the institution. My responsibilities include
- working with senior managers to communicate UCAR and NCAR priorities
- writing news releases and other science articles
- leading workshops and training sessions to prepare scientists for interviews
- generating local, national, and international news coverage
- supporting the Government Relations and Business Development teams to increase funding and collaborations
- assisting with videos, animations, and other types of images
My background
I joined UCAR in 2001, capping an award-winning career in journalism. After getting a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University, I reported for newspapers in Ohio and Florida and was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of discriminatory practices among construction contractors and questionable government budgeting techniques. As a senior writer for Congressional Quarterly in Washington, D.C., I reported on taxes, transportation, agriculture, and significant political events such as the impeachment of President Clinton. Looking for a change, I began writing on a freelance basis about science and the environment. I won several regional and national journalism awards, including a public service award from the Society of Professional Journalists for articles on the health effects of pesticides.
Some other interests
Living here in Colorado, I enjoy just about anything outdoors, such as bicycling, flatwater kayaking, and just walking with our dog. I also like hanging out with my family, cooking, and reading about history.
